Giacometti

After interior renovations in 2007, the colourful stained glass windows glowed brightly again. It was the last of over 20 stained glass windows created by Giacometti (1877*), a famous artist from Graubünden.

‘The heavenly paradise’

The monumental master piece of 9 meters hight and surface area of approx. 27 m2 is twice as large as the Chagall windows. The Giacometti window ‘The heavenly paradise’ with God the Father (bearer of the globe) and Jesus Christ to his right, together with the prophets Isaiah and Jeremiah, Ezekiel und Daniel, Hosea und Joel, Amos und Obadiah and in the bottom row the four evangelists, – Matthew, Mark, Luke and John – all surrounded by worshiping, kneeling angels, embedded into a composition of dense, bright colours is truly worth a visit to the Fraumünster.

Creation

The windows were introduced into the Fraumünster September 1945 after a long, hapless creation process. The crisis of the thirties and the second world war repeatedly turned the plans upside down. On 9 Oktober 1945, a few months after the war had ended, a inauguration ceremony with Augusto Giacometti took place.
